When wealthy housewife Alison Courtland wakes up screaming on a train bound for Boston, it's because she has no recollection of boarding it. The dramatic opening of Douglas Sirk's film noir is followed by her loving husband Richard, distraught at her plight, engaging psychiatrist Charles Vernay to help her, but Vernay is a quack, part of Richard's plan to drive Alison to suicide so he can inherit her fortune.
