“Mom, why was I born so pretty?” asks 10-year-old Yula, who is growing up in Putin’s Russia in the largest junkyard in Europe, called the Svalka. The Svalka, one of the most dismal places on Earth, is a huge mountain of trash, located on the outskirts of Moscow, only thirteen miles from the Kremlin. Surrounded by a concrete wall, the area is closely monitored and heavily guarded to keep intruders out, while criminal activities run rampant inside. Trespassing and filming here is strictly forbidden. Yula has but one dream—to escape the Svalka and have a normal life. For 14 years, we follow Yula as she matures and gains control of her destiny.
