A comedy about a beachcomber (Laughton) in the Dutch East Indies who runs afoul of a self-righteous missionary (Tyrone Guthrie) and his militant sister (Elsa Lanchester) who want him deported for “corrupting” the natives. A drunk and a lecher, half monster, half-pagan god, he winds up charming Lanchester from loathing to fascination and ultimately into matrimony.
