At an elegant gathering of English nobility, young widow Fay Cheyney wins the favor of all with her beauty, musicality and clever repartee. Mrs. Cheyney, however, is not who she claims to be. She’s part of a cadre of con artists who intend to steal a valuable necklace owned by one of the bluebloods. But the heist may go awry when witty and handsome Lord Arthur Dilling, the nephew of the targeted victim, steals the light-fingered femme’s heart.
Love and larceny may — or may not — mix when Norma Shearer (The Women) brings her ultrachic manner to the title role and Basil Rathbone (future star of the 1939–46 Sherlock Holmes films) plays Dilling in this early talkie based on a celebrated stage hit and directed by Sidney Franklin (The Good Earth). Hedda Hopper, who later became an influential Hollywood gossip columnist, portrays Lady Maria.
