In The Last Outpost (1935), Cary Grant plays Michael Andrews, a British prisoner of war is who rescued from a firing squad by his mysterious cellmate John Stevenson (Claude Rains). As the two men make their way to safety across treacherous mountain terrain, Andrews suspects Stevenson of being an enemy spy and is wounded during a confrontation with him. As he recuperates in a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, Andrews falls in love with nurse Rosemary Haydon (Gertrude Michael), not realizing she is the wife of Stevenson. A rousing action-adventure crossed with a romantic melodrama and set in Turkistan during World War I, The Last Outpost is distinguished by the stylish art direction of two Academy Award nominees - Hans Dreier (Samson and Delilah, Sunset Blvd.) and A. Earl Hedrick (The Proud and Profane) - and builds to an exciting climax in the Sudan desert.
