Richard Attenborough heads the cast in this drama set in the years immediately following the Second World War. Education in England is undergoing radical changes, and Jack Read is a Cockney boy chosen to attend a Public School. He is actually a guinea pig in an educational experiment. He is miserable, and alienated from the other pupils for his different ways. He also comes across hostility from the staff, apart from a sympathetic young teacher named Mr Lorraine. When Jack is ready to run away, it is up to Lorraine to try and change his mind.
