Before dying, Willie Ramsey's (James Gleason) last wish was to come back as a racehorse and win the Kentucky Derby. So when his niece, Terry (Terry Moore), comes across October, a horse that looks and acts remarkably like her late uncle, she buys it, outbidding Professor Bassett (Glenn Ford) a psychologist who wanted it for his research. As Terry prepares to honor her uncle's dying wish by preparing for the Derby, Bassett's book about October and his resemblance to Willie is seized upon by some greedy relatives in their campaign to get a hold of her estate by having Terry declared insane. But when October wins the race, it forces everyone to reconsider their opinion of the young woman's sanity.
