Anthony Quinn plays an Eskimo hunter living in an inhospitable environment. In his community there is a shortage of women, and wives are shared out amongst the men. Inuk (Quinn) has borrowed the wives of others but decides one day that he needs one of his own. He chooses a young bride and they live together, dividing up the domestic labour, until a missionary arrives. Inuk offers him his wife - a token of hospitality in Eskimo eyes. When the missionary refuses, Inuk is insulted and beats him. He has killed him, and is arrested by a group of white police. They are to take him to trial, but as danger nears, Inuk strikes up a friendship with one of the men. This relationship may yet save his life.
