John Howard Barrington escapes from the State Asylum for the criminally insane intent on.clearing himself on a murder charge. He has been convicted of strangling a young woman with a scarf -- but he cannot remember whether or not he actually committed the crime. The police begin an intensive manhunt, but John eludes them, hiding out in the shack of a turkey rancher, Ezra Thompson. To check on the details of his case., John travels to Los Angeles and visits the office of psychiatrist Dr. David Dunbar. And he is not without friends; Connie, a waitress, and prison psychiatrist Dr. Gordon, are beginning to believe that John may well be innocent~ During his visit with Dunbar, the psychiatrist is able to convince John that he truly is guilty. But the psychiatrist’s actions arouse suspicion in both Dr. Gordon and Thompson. They convince Connie to visit Dunbar’s office wearing the same kind of scarf found on the neck of the murdered girl. Dunbar, seeing Connie with the scarf, goes beserk and tries to strangle her. The real killer is exposed and John goes free.
