A young man (Estevez) returns home unharmed from the Vietnam war. Although his body is healthy, violet nightmares and battlefield hallucinations torment his mind. His middle class family pretends that nothing is wrong, and does its best to ignore the son's breakdown. His parents deny the situation by pushing their son to return to his former life, as if he were unchanged by having killed men in battle. Their silence and his rage reach a fiery showdown when the son snaps, and the family is forced to reconcile or be destroyed.
