Oscar-winner Gene Hackman plays a middle-aged Seattle steelworker content with his job and his family, but feels that something is missing in his life.
Visiting a local tavern to celebrate his 50th birthday, he finds himself enchanted with the very sexy barmaid (Ann-Margret). In less time than it takes to down his beer, he resolves to leave his wife (Ellen Burstyn) and daughters (Amy Madigan and Ally Sheedy) in favor of a fresh start with his new "conquest."
Their resulting affair takes its toll on his family, especially his wife, who suddenly must start over again.
Also starring Golden Globe-winner Brian Dennehy. Hackman received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance, while Madigan received a Golden Globe nomination and an Academy Award nod for her role.
