Dancing with the Stars: Halloween Night

It was “Famous Dances Night” during Week 5 of Season 21 of Dancing with the Stars! The nine remaining teams took on some of the most iconic dances of all time. So it’s fitting that one of the most iconic stars of all time, Olivia Newton-John, joined the fun as a guest judge. Leah Remini When all the dancing was done, we had to bid adieu to another fine team. Let’s see how the evening played out. Hayes Grier & Emma Slater did their slick Jazz routine to “You’re the One That I Want” by John Travolta and guest judge Olivia Newton-John from the Grease soundtrack. The routine was truly rockin'. Olivia thought Hayes reminded her of John - as in Travolta! The other judges were a little more critical, but they all still liked it. Andy Grammer & Allison Holker did their Jazz routine to “Good Morning” by Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor from Singin’ in the Rain. The judges were thoroughly impressed at how this team reinvented such an iconic scene. Olivia Newton-John once danced with Gene Kelly and she said she’d be happy to dance with Andy anytime. The team reeled in all 10s giving Andy and Allison their first perfecto of the season. Alexa PenaVega & Mark Ballas teamed up for a Cha Cha to “I’m a Slave 4 U” by Britney Spears from her iconic VMA performance. Yes, there was a snake involved. Unfortunately, Carrie Ann and Julianne felt Alexa missed the essence of Britney. Nevertheless, the team pulled in scores of 8-7-7-8. Bindi Irwin & Derek Hough did the Rumba to “(I’ve Had) The Time of my Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes from the Dirty Dancingsoundtrack. Jennifer Grey, aka Baby, paid the team a visit during rehearsals. When it came time to hit the dance floor, Derek kicked off the routine by saying, “Nobody puts Bindi in a corner.” The judges were blown away by how the team captured all the nuances of the iconic movie moment. It was good enough for the second perfect 40 of the night. Paula Deen & Louis van Amstel did a Jazz routine to “Vogue” by Madonna. During rehearsals, Paula declared that she didn’t have much in common with the Material Girl. She doesn’t wear cones. She doesn’t pose nude. She does, however, go vogue. However, the judges felt that perhaps the costume outshined the routine. Their scores of 6-6-6-6 were low for the evening. Carlos PenaVega & Witney Carson did the Rumba to “Pony” by Ginuwine from Magic Mike. Carlos admitted that he was uncomfortable doing such a raunchy routine. When it came time to dance, Carlos had a little trouble ripping off his shirt. That didn’t stop him from turning in a top-notch performance. Olivia Newton-John felt he could very easily get a job in Vegas. The team pulled in scores of 10-9-9-10. Nick Carter & Sharna Burgess did a Samba to “You Should be Dancing” by the Bee Gees from the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack. The team certainly embraced the ‘70s with their slick, shiny outfits and some super-frizzy hair on Sharna. Olivia felt Nick brought disco back. Only Carrie Ann found some flaws. Guess that’s why she gave the team a 9 while all the other judges turned over 10s. Alek Skarlatos & Lindsay Arnolddid the Jive to “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley from the movie of the same name. To get into character, Alek dressed up like the King and took to the streets of L.A. to turn some heads. When it come time to hit the dance floor, the judges felt like he held back a bit and lacked intensity. The judges gave them scores of 8-8-7-7. Tamar Braxton & Val Chmerkovskiyteamed up for a Jazz routine to “Rhythm Nation” by Janet Jackson paying tribute to her famed music video. The dance was slick, sharp and precise. Bruno complimented Tamar’s comeback performance. Carrie Ann felt she nailed in perfectly, as did Julianne. Guess that’s why they got the third perfect 40 of the night. At the end of the evening, we had to bid adieu to Paula Deen, who was gracious and glad to be able to get back to her grandchildren.
