Athletes are generally known for their physical abilities, fit physiques and superior work ethic. Fifteen-year-old Julie is known around her Ohio high school for her aggressive behavior, negative attitude and couch potato manner. But she's convinced family and friends that she can put those ways behind her and be MADE into a varsity volleyball player. Julie meets her MADE coach -- G.I. Jeanne, a bodybuilder and former volleyball star -- at the volleyball club she runs. Jeanne puts Julie to work and recognizes Julie's basic skills, but knows she needs a lot of conditioning work. Julie needs to cut her 19-minute mile down to an eight-minute run, eat healthy, learn to communicate and improve her skills. When she quickly tires of Julie's whining, crying and complaining, Jeanne punishes her for every time she talks back or fails to follow directions. After some basic training, Julie gets sick of Jeanne's grueling workouts and walks out on an early-morning run. Julie's parents thwart their daughter's plans to quit by allowing Jeanne to join them on their family vacation. The coach comes up with creative exercises to keep Julie active and, after a bonding session, watches as her pupil's attitude improves. Julie makes positive strides and is confident she'll make the team lineup -- until she sprains both ankles. When Jeanne and the doctor say she can work through the pain, Julie vows not to give up. Right before tryouts, Julie's nervous about trying to accomplish her goal and doesn't want to try, but Jeanne convinces her that she's worked too hard to throw in the towel. The first day starts out with sprints. Julie improves every time, which impresses the coach. The day finishes off well with Julie's favorite skill, serving the ball. The crux of the second day of tryouts is clocking an eight-minute mile and while Julie doesn't meet the mark, she manages to cut eight minutes off her early summer time. When the coach posts the team list, Julie and Jeanne check out the names only to find Julie hasn't made the team. But everyone is proud of her improvements and Julie is determined to start working immediately to prepare for the next year's tryouts, proving she has been MADE into a dedicated athlete.
