Pray for Blood

This sophisticated, multi-layered supernatural thriller investigates a spate of macabre murders in Mexico City, the first of which takes place under cover of the fireworks and festivities of Independence Day, where the victims are mutilated beyond recognition. Their hearts and other body parts are laid out on an altar in a city museum in a chilling echo of Aztec rituals of human sacrifice. Embittered but principled crime reporter Eugenio Casasola joins forces with scrupulous police inspector Edith Mondragón in a quest to find the killer. Archaeological researcher Elisa Matos tells Casasola the murders replicate historical ‘dire warnings’ that foretold the arrival of the Spanish, and his newspaper breaks the story. When the investigation leads them to a healer known as ‘La Bruja’ (The Witch), it falls to Edith and Casasola to avert a final sacrifice that aims to turn the world upside down and restore an ancient order.
